Radio Montserrat, initially a passion project launched from the basement of founder Frank Delisle's home in 1952, quickly evolved into a vital government-owned institution. After the government assumed control in 1957, the station, known as ZJB, was largely supported by dedicated volunteers. Notably, in the 1960s, resourceful volunteer technicians Hylton and Denzil Edgecombe ingeniously built much of the station's equipment, famously using cake pans as amplifiers to cover Queen Elizabeth's visit in 1966. This period marked a turning point, as the government recognized the station's importance and began to formally employ a small staff in 1964. Over the subsequent decades, Radio Montserrat demonstrated remarkable resilience in the face of significant challenges. The station was severely damaged by Hurricane Hugo in the 1980s, forcing a shift to FM transmission with assistance from the Caribbean Broadcast Union. After moving to a new state-of-the-art facility in the early 1990s under Station Manager Rose Willock, the station was displaced multiple times due to volcanic activity. Despite these setbacks, ZJB has persevered, operating from various temporary locations before establishing its permanent home in Davy Hill in 2019, continuing its long legacy of serving the community of Montserrat.
Located in Plymouth, Montserrat at Sweeney’s Montserrat MSR1110, the station maintains strong community connections and can be reached by phone at 1-664-491-2885 or by email at zjb@gov.ms.
